한국의 쓰레기는 크게 다섯 갈래로 나뉩니다. 돈을 내고 사는 종량제 봉투에 넣는 일반쓰레기, 따로 모아 사료·퇴비로 쓰는 음식물쓰레기, 봉투값 없이 종류별로 내놓는 재활용품, 건전지·형광등·약처럼 전용 수거함에 넣는 것, 그리고 신고하고 수수료를 내는 대형폐기물입니다. 아래 품목 40개는 대부분 지역에서 통하는 일반적인 기준을 오별랩이 직접 정리한 것입니다. 시·군·구나 아파트가 다르게 정했다면 그 규칙이 우선이니, 우리 동네 안내와 관리사무소 공지를 함께 보세요.

헷갈릴 때 기억할 원칙은 세 가지입니다. 첫째, 동물이 먹을 수 없는 딱딱한 것(뼈, 껍데기, 큰 씨)은 음식물이 아닙니다. 둘째, 재활용품은 비우고 헹구고 다른 재질을 떼어야 재활용됩니다. 음식물이 묻어 씻기지 않으면 일반쓰레기입니다. 셋째, 불이 나거나 다칠 수 있는 것(건전지, 가스 캔, 깨진 유리)은 따로 처리합니다.

Waste in Korea falls into five groups: general waste in the paid official bag, food waste collected separately for feed and compost, recyclables sorted by type with no bag fee, items for special collection boxes such as batteries, lamps and medicines, and bulky waste that you report and pay for. The 40 items below follow the common rules in most areas, written by OByeolLab. If your city, district or apartment complex says otherwise, follow your local rule.

Three rules of thumb: hard things animals cannot eat (bones, shells, big stones) are not food waste; recyclables must be empty, rinsed and free of other materials, or they become general waste; anything that can start a fire or cut someone (batteries, gas cans, broken glass) is handled separately.

남은 밥과 반찬 · Leftover rice and side dishes

국물과 물기를 최대한 빼고, 이쑤시개·비닐·은박지 같은 것을 골라낸 뒤 음식물쓰레기로 버려요.

Drain off soup and water, pick out toothpicks, plastic and foil, then put it out as food waste.
사과·바나나·귤 껍질 · Apple, banana and mandarin peels

부드러운 과일 껍질은 음식물쓰레기예요. 과일에 붙은 스티커는 떼어 일반쓰레기로 버려요.

Soft fruit peels are food waste. Peel off any fruit stickers and put those in the general waste bag.
수박 껍질 · Watermelon rind

음식물쓰레기예요. 부피가 커서 잘게 자르고 물기를 빼면 봉투나 통에 덜 들어가고 냄새도 줄어요.

Food waste. Cut it into small pieces and let it drain so it takes less space and smells less.
김치와 장아찌 · Kimchi and pickles

건더기는 음식물쓰레기로 버려요. 국물은 최대한 따라 내고, 담았던 통은 씻어서 재질에 맞게 재활용해요.

The solid part is food waste. Pour off as much liquid as you can and wash the container for recycling by material.

일반쓰레기 (종량제 봉투) · General waste (pay-as-you-throw bag) (10)

달걀 껍데기 · Eggshells

딱딱해서 사료나 퇴비로 쓰기 어려워 대부분 지역에서 일반쓰레기(종량제 봉투)로 버려요.

They are too hard for feed or compost, so most areas want them in the general waste bag.
닭뼈·돼지뼈·생선뼈 · Chicken, pork and fish bones

뼈는 음식물쓰레기가 아니에요. 살을 발라 낸 뼈는 종량제 봉투에 넣어요.

Bones are not food waste. Put them in the general waste bag once the meat is off.
조개·굴·게 껍데기 · Clam, oyster and crab shells

단단한 껍데기는 일반쓰레기예요. 양이 많으면 냄새가 덜 나게 물기를 빼고 봉투를 잘 묶어요.

Hard shells go in the general waste bag. Drain them and tie the bag well to keep the smell in.
양파·마늘 껍질, 대파 뿌리 · Onion and garlic skins, green onion roots

마르고 질겨서 대부분 지역에서 일반쓰레기로 분류해요. 지역에 따라 음식물로 받는 곳도 있으니 동네 안내를 확인해요.

Dry and tough, so most areas treat them as general waste. A few accept them as food waste, so check locally.
티백과 커피 찌꺼기 · Tea bags and coffee grounds

티백은 종이·실이 섞여 있어 일반쓰레기예요. 커피 찌꺼기도 보통 말려서 종량제 봉투에 넣어요.

Tea bags contain paper and string, so they are general waste. Coffee grounds usually go dry into the general bag too.
복숭아·망고 같은 큰 씨 · Large fruit stones (peach, mango)

크고 딱딱한 씨는 일반쓰레기예요. 과육은 음식물로, 씨는 종량제 봉투로 나눠요.

Large hard stones are general waste. The fruit flesh is food waste; the stone goes in the general bag.
호두·땅콩 껍데기 · Walnut and peanut shells

견과류 껍데기는 딱딱해서 일반쓰레기예요.

Nut shells are hard, so they are general waste.
휴지·물티슈·기저귀 · Tissues, wet wipes and diapers

모두 재활용이 안 돼요. 종량제 봉투에 넣고, 기저귀는 내용물을 변기에 버린 뒤 말아서 넣어요.

None of these can be recycled. Use the general bag; empty diapers into the toilet first and roll them up.
영수증 · Receipts

반짝이는 감열지 영수증은 종이로 재활용되지 않아 일반쓰레기로 버려요.

Shiny thermal-paper receipts are not recycled as paper, so they go in the general bag.
칫솔·볼펜·고무장갑 · Toothbrushes, pens and rubber gloves

여러 재질이 섞인 작은 물건은 분리하기 어려워 일반쓰레기로 버려요.

Small items made of mixed materials are hard to separate, so they go in the general bag.

불연성 (마대 등) · Non-burnable (sack etc.) (1)

깨진 유리·도자기·뚝배기 · Broken glass, pottery and earthenware pots

재활용 유리병 칸에 넣으면 안 돼요. 조금이면 신문지 등으로 단단히 싸서 "깨진 유리"라고 적은 뒤 종량제 봉투에, 양이 많으면 불연성 마대(특수규격마대)에 넣는 것이 일반적이에요. 내열유리 그릇과 도자기도 같은 방식이에요. 동네 규칙을 확인해요.

Never put them with recyclable glass. A small amount is usually wrapped well in newspaper, marked "broken glass" and put in the general bag; larger amounts go in the special non-burnable sack. Heat-resistant glassware and pottery are handled the same way. Check your local rule.

재활용품 · Recyclables (15)

투명 생수·음료 페트병 · Clear water and drink bottles

내용물을 비우고 라벨을 뗀 뒤 눌러서 부피를 줄이고 뚜껑을 닫아요. 투명 페트병만 따로 모으는 칸이 있으면 거기에 넣어요.

Empty it, peel off the label, squash it and put the cap back on. If there is a separate slot for clear PET bottles, use it.
샴푸·세제 통 같은 색깔 플라스틱 · Coloured plastic containers (shampoo, detergent)

내용물을 비우고 물로 헹궈 플라스틱으로 내놓아요. 펌프 부분은 쇠 스프링이 있어 떼어 일반쓰레기로 버려요.

Empty and rinse, then put out as plastic. Pump heads contain a metal spring, so remove them and put them in the general bag.
배달 음식 플라스틱 용기 · Plastic takeaway containers

남은 음식을 버리고 세제로 씻어 플라스틱으로 내놓아요. 빨간 기름 자국이 지워지지 않으면 일반쓰레기로 버려요.

Scrape out the food and wash with detergent, then recycle as plastic. If red oil stains will not come off, put it in the general bag.
컵라면 용기 · Instant noodle cups

국물과 기름이 배기 쉬워 일반쓰레기로 내는 경우가 많아요. 헹궈서 자국이 전혀 없으면 스티로폼 용기는 스티로폼으로, 종이 용기는 종이컵·종이팩 칸으로 내놓아요.

Soup and oil soak in easily, so these often end up as general waste. If a rinsed cup is completely clean, a foam cup goes out as Styrofoam and a paper cup with paper cups and cartons.
택배 스티로폼 상자 · Styrofoam delivery boxes

테이프, 송장, 스티커를 모두 떼고 깨끗한 흰 스티로폼만 내놓아요. 색이 있거나 코팅된 것, 음식물이 배어 안 지워지는 것은 일반쓰레기예요. 가전제품 포장재는 되도록 판매처에 돌려줘요.

Remove all tape, address labels and stickers and put out only clean white foam. Coloured or coated foam, or foam with food soaked in, is general waste. Return appliance packing to the seller where you can.
비닐봉지·과자 봉지 · Plastic bags and snack wrappers

안의 부스러기를 털고, 양념 같은 것이 묻었으면 물로 헹궈 말린 뒤 비닐류로 모아 내놓아요. 씻어도 지워지지 않는 것은 일반쓰레기예요.

Shake out crumbs; if sauce or food is stuck on, rinse and dry the bag, then put them out together as plastic film. Bags that will not come clean are general waste.
우유팩·주스팩 · Milk and juice cartons

헹군 뒤 펼쳐서 말리고 일반 종이와 따로 묶어요. 주민센터에서 종이팩을 모아 오면 휴지 등으로 바꿔 주는 곳도 있어요.

Rinse, open flat, dry and tie them separately from other paper. Some community centres swap collected cartons for tissues.
종이컵 · Paper cups

헹궈서 겹쳐 모은 뒤 종이팩·종이컵 칸이 있으면 거기에, 없으면 종이류와 구분해 묶어 내놓아요.

Rinse and stack them. Use a carton/cup slot if there is one; otherwise tie them apart from other paper.
신문·책·공책 · Newspapers, books and notebooks

비닐 표지, 스프링, 테이프를 떼고 끈으로 묶거나 종이 칸에 넣어요. 젖은 종이는 재활용이 안 돼요.

Remove plastic covers, spiral wires and tape, then tie them up or use the paper bin. Wet paper cannot be recycled.
택배 골판지 상자 · Cardboard delivery boxes

테이프와 송장을 떼고 펼쳐서 납작하게 만든 뒤 종이류로 내놓아요. 송장의 개인정보는 지우거나 찢어요.

Remove tape and the address label, flatten the box and put it out as paper. Black out or tear off your personal details.
음료수 캔·통조림 캔 · Drink and food cans

비우고 헹군 뒤 가능하면 눌러서 캔류로 내놓아요. 통조림 뚜껑은 날카로우니 안으로 접어 넣어요.

Empty, rinse and squash if you can, then put out as cans. Fold sharp lids inwards.
부탄가스·스프레이 캔 · Butane canisters and spray cans

불기가 없고 바람이 잘 통하는 바깥에서 노즐을 눌러 남은 가스를 끝까지 빼요. 구멍을 뚫으라고 하는 지역도 있는데, 그때도 가스를 다 뺀 뒤에 해요. 그다음 캔류로 내놓아요.

Outdoors, in a well-ventilated spot away from any flame, press the nozzle until all the gas is out. Some areas also ask you to pierce the can; only do that once it is empty. Then put it out as cans.
음료·소주·소스 유리병 · Glass bottles (drinks, soju, sauces)

뚜껑을 따로 빼고 비워서 유리병으로 내놓아요. 소주·맥주병처럼 보증금이 붙은 병은 마트 등에 가져가면 돈을 돌려받을 수 있어요.

Take off the cap, empty the bottle and put it out as glass. Deposit bottles such as soju and beer bottles can be returned at shops for money.
프라이팬·냄비 · Frying pans and pots

쇠로 된 것은 고철로 내놓아요. 플라스틱 손잡이는 뗄 수 있으면 떼어 일반쓰레기로 버려요.

Metal ones go out as scrap metal. Remove plastic handles if you can and put them in the general bag.
헌 옷·신발·가방 · Old clothes, shoes and bags

깨끗하고 마른 것을 의류수거함에 넣어요. 신발은 짝을 묶어요. 솜이불·베개는 받지 않는 수거함이 많아요.

Put clean, dry items in a clothing bin. Tie shoes in pairs. Many bins do not take quilts or pillows.

전용 수거함 · Special collection box (6)

건전지 · Batteries

주민센터, 아파트, 마트 등의 폐건전지 수거함에 넣어요. 종량제 봉투에 넣으면 불이 날 수 있어요.

Use the battery box at a community centre, apartment complex or shop. In the trash bag they can start fires.
형광등 · Fluorescent lamps

깨지지 않게 그대로 폐형광등 수거함에 넣어요. 깨진 것은 수거함에 넣지 말고, 신문지 등으로 싸서 종량제 봉투에(양이 많으면 불연성 마대에) 넣어요.

Put them unbroken in a fluorescent lamp box. A broken one does not go in the box: wrap it in newspaper and put it in the general bag (or the non-burnable sack for larger amounts).
먹지 않은 약 · Unused medicines

알약은 겉 포장을 벗겨 한 봉투에 모아 밀봉하고, 가루약은 종이 포장째, 물약은 한 병에 모아 마개를 꼭 닫아요. 주민센터·보건소·약국 등의 폐의약품 수거함에 넣고, 알약·가루약은 "폐의약품"이라고 적은 봉투에 담아 우체통에 넣게 하는 지역도 있어요. 받는 곳은 지역마다 달라요.

Take pills out of their outer boxes and seal them together in one bag, keep powders in their paper packets, and pour liquids into one bottle with the cap tight. Use a medicine box at a community centre, health centre or pharmacy; some areas also let you post pills and powders in a bag marked "폐의약품". Which places accept them varies.
폐식용유 · Used cooking oil

하수구에 붓지 말아요. 아파트의 폐식용유 수거통에 모으거나, 적은 양은 키친타월·신문지에 흡수시켜 종량제 봉투에 넣어요.

Never pour it down the drain. Use the oil container in your apartment complex, or soak up small amounts with paper towels or newspaper and put them in the general bag.
아이스팩 · Ice packs

안이 물이면 물을 버리고 비닐을 비닐류로 내놓아요. 젤 아이스팩은 통째로 종량제 봉투에 넣거나 지역 아이스팩 수거함을 써요.

If it holds water, pour it out and recycle the plastic as film. Gel packs go whole into the general bag or into a local ice-pack box.
휴대폰·충전기·작은 가전 · Phones, chargers and small appliances

소형가전 수거함에 넣거나, 보통 5개 이상 모으면 무상 방문수거를 신청할 수 있어요. 휴대폰은 개인정보를 지운 뒤 버려요.

Use a small-appliance box, or book a free home pickup once you have about five or more items. Wipe your personal data from phones first.

대형폐기물·방문수거 · Bulky waste / pickup (4)

냉장고·세탁기·TV · Fridges, washing machines and TVs

큰 가전은 무상 방문수거 서비스를 먼저 알아보세요. 예약하면 수수료 없이 가져가는 경우가 많아요. 안 되면 대형폐기물로 신고해요.

Check the free home pickup service for large appliances first; booked pickups are often free. Otherwise report it as bulky waste.
소파·침대·책상·의자 · Sofas, beds, desks and chairs

대형폐기물로 신고하고 수수료를 낸 뒤 받은 스티커나 번호를 붙여 정해진 날, 정해진 곳에 내놓아요.

Report it as bulky waste, pay the fee, attach the sticker or number you receive and put it out on the set day at the set spot.
매트리스 · Mattresses

크기(싱글·더블 등)에 따라 수수료가 달라요. 대형폐기물로 신고하고, 비를 맞지 않게 내놓는 시간을 지켜요.

The fee depends on size (single, double and so on). Report it as bulky waste and keep to the put-out time so it does not get rained on.
이불·베개 · Quilts and pillows

종량제 봉투에 들어가면 일반쓰레기로, 들어가지 않으면 대형폐기물로 신고하는 지역이 많아요. 의류수거함에는 넣지 않아요.

In many areas they go in the general bag if they fit, and are reported as bulky waste if not. Do not put them in clothing bins.

봉투와 용기 · Bags and containers

종량제 봉투 (일반쓰레기) · Pay-as-you-throw bag (general waste)

편의점, 마트, 동네 가게에서 사는 지정 봉투예요. 봉투값에 처리 비용이 들어 있어서, 다른 봉투에 담아 버리면 무단투기가 돼요. 보통 내가 사는 시·군·구의 봉투만 쓸 수 있고, 크기는 몇 리터부터 수십 리터까지 있어요. 이사하면 새 동네 봉투를 사세요.

The official bag sold at convenience stores, supermarkets and corner shops. The price includes the disposal cost, so using any other bag counts as illegal dumping. Usually only bags of your own city, county or district are accepted, in sizes from a few litres to several dozen. Buy new bags when you move.

음식물쓰레기 (전용 봉투·칩·RFID) · Food waste (bag, chip or RFID)

지역과 건물에 따라 방식이 달라요. 음식물 전용 봉투에 담아 수거용기에 넣는 곳, 용기에 납부칩이나 스티커를 붙이는 곳, 아파트의 RFID 종량기에 카드를 대고 무게만큼 내는 곳이 있어요. 어느 쪽이든 물기를 빼고 뼈·껍데기 같은 딱딱한 것은 빼요.

The method depends on your area and building: a special food waste bag placed in a bin, a prepaid chip or sticker on your own bin, or an RFID scale in an apartment complex that charges by weight when you tap a card. In every case drain the water and keep hard things such as bones and shells out.

재활용품 (봉투 없이 또는 투명 봉투) · Recyclables (no paid bag)

재활용품은 돈 내는 봉투가 필요 없어요. 아파트는 단지 분리수거장의 칸에 종류별로 넣고, 주택가는 정해진 요일에 투명 봉투에 담거나 묶어서 내놓는 곳이 많아요. 비우고, 헹구고, 다른 재질을 떼는 것이 기본이에요.

Recyclables need no paid bag. In apartment complexes use the sorted bins in the recycling area; in residential streets they are often put out on set days in a clear bag or tied up. The basics: empty, rinse, and remove parts made of other materials.

불연성 마대 · Sack for non-burnable waste

깨진 유리, 도자기, 흙, 작은 돌처럼 타지 않는 것을 담는 튼튼한 자루예요. 주민센터나 봉투 판매소에서 파는 곳이 많고, 이런 마대를 따로 쓰지 않는 지역도 있어요.

A strong sack for things that do not burn: broken glass, pottery, soil and small stones. Many community centres and bag shops sell them; some areas do not use a separate sack.

대형폐기물 스티커·신고 번호 · Bulky waste sticker or report number

가구나 큰 물건은 봉투가 아니라 신고로 버려요. 수수료를 내면 스티커나 신고 번호를 받고, 그것을 물건에 붙이거나 적어서 내놓아요.

Furniture and other large items are not bagged but reported. When you pay the fee you get a sticker or report number to attach to, or write on, the item.

대형폐기물 버리는 순서 · Throwing out bulky waste

품목과 크기를 확인해요. 큰 가전이면 무상 방문수거가 되는지 먼저 알아봐요.
Check the item and its size. For a large appliance, first see whether free home pickup applies.
구청 누리집, 지역 앱, 주민센터 중 동네에서 받는 방법으로 대형폐기물을 신고해요.
Report the bulky waste the way your area accepts: district website, local app or community service centre.
품목별 수수료를 내요. 신고 번호나 납부필증(스티커)을 받아요.
Pay the fee for the item. You receive a report number or a fee sticker.
스티커를 잘 보이게 붙이거나 번호를 크게 적어요.
Attach the sticker where it is easy to see, or write the number clearly on the item.
정해진 날짜와 시간에, 정해진 장소(보통 집 앞이나 지정 장소)에 내놓아요. 이 안내의 "대형폐기물" 칸에 우리 동네 방법이 적혀 있으면 그대로 따라요.
Put it out on the set day and time at the set place (often in front of your home or a designated spot). If the "bulky waste" box on this site shows your area's method, follow it.

과태료 · Fines

생활폐기물을 정해진 곳·방법을 따르지 않고 버리거나(제8조), 조례에 따른 분리·배출 의무(제15조)를 어기면 100만원 이하의 과태료 대상이에요. (폐기물관리법 제68조제3항제1호·제3호)

Throwing household waste away outside the set place or method (Art. 8), or breaking the sorting and put-out duties set by local ordinance (Art. 15), can bring a fine of up to 1,000,000 won.

금액은 시행령 [별표 8]의 기준이고, 실제 부과와 감경(같은 별표 일반기준 다목: 2분의 1 범위)은 시·군·구가 정해요. 1차·2차·3차 이상은 최근 1년 안에 같은 위반을 다시 했을 때예요.

Amounts follow the decree's [Annex 8]; the city, county or district imposes them and may reduce them (Annex 8, general rule 1-다: by up to half). 1st/2nd/3rd+ refers to repeating the same violation within one year.
